Empowering Women Through Health Awareness

On August 16, 2026, the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) and the Indian Muslim Social Service Association (IMSSA) organized a Women’s Health Workshop at Masjid Darul Makmur, bringing together around 100 Indian Muslim women to discuss critical health issues relevant in their lives. The workshop provided essential insights into preventive healthcare and aimed to empower participants with knowledge tailored to their cultural needs.

Community Engagement and Support

This workshop marked the second collaborative effort between SINDA and IMSSA. Following a Financial Literacy Workshop in April 2026, this event aligned with SINDA’s broader Let Her Shine! initiative focused on women’s empowerment. Distinguished attendees included Dr. Hamid Razak, Member of Parliament for West Coast–Jurong West GRC and SINDA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Anbarasu Rajendran, who emphasized the need for accessible and reliable health information for women during various life stages.

Culturally Sensitive Health Education

Targeted primarily at Tamil-speaking Indian Muslim women aged 35 to 60, the workshop was designed to provide health education in a familiar setting. Led by Dr. Vanaja Kalaichelvan, a Senior Consultant at the National University Hospital, the topics covered included preventive health measures, common conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, and dispelling health myths in a culturally sensitive manner. An interactive Q&A session allowed participants to clarify their concerns, ensuring that the information received was both relevant and applicable.

Why It Matters

The significance of this workshop lies in its approach to addressing specific health issues faced by Indian Muslim women in Singapore. In light of rising discrimination and marginalization within broader socio-political contexts, such initiatives foster community resilience. They empower women to make informed health decisions, thus uplifting the community at large. By prioritizing culturally relevant health education, organizations like SINDA and IMSSA not only highlight women’s health challenges but also combat social exclusion by promoting inclusivity through education and empowerment.
