In a night filled with electrifying performances, Masai Russell and Alison Dos Santos set new world records in Zurich’s Diamond League, while Mondo Duplantis showcased his talents in an exhilarating pole vault competition. The event delighted a 25,000-strong crowd, signaling a remarkable shift in the athletics world.

Record-breaking Performances

The atmosphere at Letzigrund Stadium was electric as both Dos Santos and Russell shattered existing world records. Brazil’s Alison Dos Santos clocked an incredible 45.80 seconds in the 400m hurdles, eclipsing the previous record of 45.94 seconds set by Norway’s Karsten Warholm during the Tokyo Olympics. “I have been showing great form throughout the season,” he exclaimed, highlighting his confidence and determination.

Following closely in the excitement, the United States’ Masai Russell, the reigning Olympic champion, ran the 100m hurdles in a stunning 12.09 seconds, beating Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan’s record of 12.12 seconds from the Eugene World Championships in 2022. Each athlete left Zurich with a hefty $80,000 for their record-breaking feats.

Thrilling Showdown in Pole Vault

The pole vault event brought another level of excitement to the evening, featuring Mondo Duplantis, a double Olympic and triple world champion. Duplantis clinched victory with a bar clearance of 6.25m, narrowly edging out Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis, who achieved a personal best of 6.20m. This marked a historic moment as it was the first time in pole vaulting history that two athletes surpassed the 6.20m mark.

“It’s not every day two people go for the world record, so that was nuts,” commented Karalis, underscoring the thrilling nature of the competition. Both athletes attempted a world record of 6.32m, captivating the crowd with the excitement of the challenge.

Women’s 800m Achievements

The women’s 800m race showcased Switzerland’s own Audrey Werro, who delivered an outstanding performance, finishing with a time of 1:53.70. This impressive result places her as the third fastest ever in the event, tantalizingly close to Jarmila Kratochvilova’s long-standing record of 1:53.28 from 1983. “It was crazy, I am very proud. Thank you, everybody!” said Werro, reflecting her excitement and pride in her performance.

Femke Bol, a two-time world champion in the 400m hurdles, finished second and expressed her enthusiasm about transitioning into the 800m, highlighting the imperative of being part of such a competitive event.
