Resolving Conflict in Eastern DRC: A Path to Peace

M23 rebel fighters have seized control of two towns in North Kivu province, adding to the ongoing conflict in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) which has lasted for over three decades.

Millions of people have been impacted by the numerous armed groups operating in the area, with the M23 group being one of the most prominent. Allegations suggest that the M23 movement is supported by Rwanda, although the Rwandan government denies these claims.

The recent offensive by M23 fighters has led to the capture of two towns, bringing them closer to Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, by a distance of just 80km. The question remains whether regional leaders will be able to facilitate peace talks to resolve this conflict.

Hosted by Cyril Vanier, the discussion on this topic features guests such as Reagan Miviri, a researcher specializing in the DRC conflict, Solomon Dersso, the founding director of Amani Africa which focuses on peace and security policy in Africa, and David Munkley, the Director of World Vision’s response to the conflict in eastern DRC.
