The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has successfully raised ₹6,746.18 crore from a diverse group of anchor investors ahead of its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO). Major institutional players, including both domestic and foreign entities, participated in this round, signaling strong market confidence in India’s financial landscape.

Anchor Investor Participation

As part of the IPO process, NSE allotted approximately 3.78 crore shares to anchor investors at a price of ₹1,785 per share. Significant allocations were made to prominent institutional investors, with the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) receiving the largest share valued at ₹450.30 crore. Other notable allocations include ₹249.99 crore for the Government Pension Fund Global and ₹199.99 crore for the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

Further allocations were made to SBI Life Insurance Company and HDFC Life Insurance Company, with each receiving ₹149.99 crore. Nippon India Large Cap Fund was assigned ₹139.99 crore, while Morgan Stanley Asia (Singapore) got an allotment of ₹174.99 crore. This distribution demonstrates the trust major institutional investors have in NSE’s growth trajectory.

International Interest in NSE’s IPO

The IPO has garnered substantial interest from foreign institutional investors, marking a critical moment for international participation in the Indian financial markets. Several overseas investors, such as the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Goldman Sachs, Fidelity Funds, Eastspring Investments, and Carmignac Portfolio, have made significant investments. For example, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority received an allocation of ₹199.99 crore, while Goldman Sachs India Equity Portfolio was allotted ₹84.80 crore.

According to the NSE, the demand from foreign institutions was robust, showcasing interest from various geographies including the US, Europe, and Asia. Over 20 foreign long-only funds participated, collectively investing ₹2,883 crore, which amounts to 43% of the total anchor allocation.

Domestic Mutual Funds’ Contribution

Domestic mutual funds accounted for a significant portion of the overall anchor book, with a total allocation of ₹2,494.99 crore, or approximately 36.98%. These funds included 29 different mutual fund schemes. Among the larger allocations were Nippon India Large Cap Fund with ₹139.99 crore, HDFC Flexi Cap Fund with ₹129.99 crore, and SBI Banking & Financial Services Fund receiving ₹99.99 crore. The inclusion of many pension funds and insurance companies adds further depth to the investor base supporting this IPO.

The NSE is gearing up for the public subscription phase, which is set to commence on a scheduled date and is expected to conclude shortly thereafter. The total public offering represents 5.11% of the exchange’s equity, amounting to 12.64 crore shares. Importantly, the exchange will not receive any proceeds from this offer, emphasizing that it is primarily an offer for sale by existing shareholders.

What This Means

The successful fundraising indicates robust confidence from both domestic and international investors in the Indian stock market and the NSE’s prospects. This IPO marks a pivotal moment for NSE, particularly after it faced regulatory hurdles for nearly a decade. With the backing of various institutional investors, the IPO not only signals strong private interest in the Indian financial landscape but also suggests a potential increase in foreign investment inflows into the country, thereby enhancing India’s market attractiveness.
