In a brutal attempt to kill a Muslim rickshaw puller, a group of unidentified assailants allegedly assaulted him, buried him halfway in sand, and tried to set him on fire in Tripura’s capital, Agartala, on Thursday.

The survivor, Didar Hossain, a rickshaw puller by profession and a resident of Abhaynagar in Agartala, was attacked around 6.30 pm on January 1 near the Gangail Nivedita Club area by four to five unknown assailants.

After surviving the attack, Hossain filed a written complaint at the Durga Chowmuhani Outpost.

In his complaint, Hossain stated that four to five unknown miscreants suddenly blocked his path and brutally assaulted him.

“Later, they forcibly pushed me into a pile of sand and tried to kill me by setting me on fire with the clear intention of killing me,” the FIR accessed by Maktoob reads.

Hossain said he sustained serious physical and mental injuries in the attack and survived only after the assailants fled on hearing his screams and shouts. He is currently undergoing medical treatment, the complaint added.

A local resident, Habib Ur Rahman, told Maktoob that Hossain was targeted after being asked his name, following which the attackers raised questions about violence against minorities in Bangladesh.

“Hossain reportedly asked his attackers what his crime was, to which they responded by referring to attacks on ‘minorities’ across the border,” Rahman added.

In his complaint, Hossain described the incident as a “heinous, serious and non-bailable offence”.

The police have registered a case against the unidentified accused under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 109 (attempt to murder), Section 115(2) (causing grievous hurt), and Section 326 (arson or attempt to cause death by fire).

The incident triggered widespread outrage in Agartala, with many people taking part in a protest march demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and strict action.

Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and TIPRA Motha leader Shah Alam were among those who joined and led the demonstration.

Speaking to Maktoob, Shah Alam said, “Except for registering a complaint, the police have not done anything substantial so far. And it is the same with the other cases related to minorities.”
