MK Stalin Defends Muslims, Critiques AIADMK’s Backing of Citizenship Amendment Act

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M K Stalin, has recently highlighted the DMK’s dedication to safeguarding Muslim rights, underscoring the party’s stance against policies that adversely affect the community. Addressing an Iftar gathering organized by the DMK’s minority wing in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, CM Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK has consistently defended Muslim interests, particularly in opposition to political measures like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He also criticized the AIADMK for ‘joining the Iftar without any sense of guilt or shame’.

What is CAA?

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is legislation enacted by the Indian Parliament in December 2019 that modifies the Citizenship Act of 1955. The amendment seeks to offer a route to Indian citizenship for specific undocumented migrants from neighboring nations who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

Specifically, the CAA is aimed at Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

Critics contend that the CAA discriminates against Muslims by excluding them from its benefits, thus compromising the secular ideals of the Indian Constitution. The DMK, under Stalin’s leadership, has been outspoken in its resistance to the CAA, perceiving it as a challenge to Muslim rights and national integrity.

AIADMK’s Position on CAA

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) expressed support for the CAA when it was presented in Parliament. CM Stalin condemned this position, stating, “When the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was brought forward, the DMK opposed it because the CAA was against the Muslims. In contrast, AIADMK MPs endorsed it.”

Stalin’s Attack on Edappadi K Palaniswami

Stalin also directed his criticism at former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami for his involvement in an Iftar event, despite having previously backed the CAA. Palaniswami had downplayed the CAA’s ramifications for Muslims, asserting that not a single Muslim would be impacted by it.

In his remarks about Edappadi K Palaniswami’s attendance at an Iftar gathering, Stalin pointed out, “Palaniswami had insisted that not a single Muslim would be impacted by the CAA… minorities will never forget or forgive him for this betrayal.”

“After acting against Muslims during a crucial time, he now partakes in the Iftar without any guilt or remorse,” stated the Chief Minister.

DMK’s Commitment to Muslim Rights

“When the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was presented, the DMK voted against it as the CAA was detrimental to Muslims,” MK Stalin stressed, asserting that the DMK will persist in opposing any policies or legislations that target Muslims.

The DMK’s position is based on its longstanding relationship with the Muslim community, which is characterized by the introduction of welfare initiatives and advocacy for their rights.

Stalin recalled that the DMK government, led by former Chief Minister Karunanidhi, launched several programs benefiting Muslims, including declaring a public holiday for Milad Un-Nabi and establishing a Welfare Board for minorities.
