Maharashtra has surpassed Tamil Nadu in total renewable energy capacity and is now ranked third among Indian states, following Gujarat and Rajasthan.

As of the end of August 2025, Maharashtra’s renewable energy installed capacity reached 26,929 megawatts (MW), eclipsing Tamil Nadu’s capacity of 26,194 MW. Tamil Nadu, previously the leading state in renewable energy, has fallen to fourth place, while Gujarat and Rajasthan hold the top two positions with 39,275 MW and 39,014 MW, respectively.

Karnataka is also making significant strides, closely trailing Tamil Nadu with a renewable energy capacity of 24,816 MW, bolstered by substantial recent additions.

Despite the shift in rankings, Tamil Nadu recorded the highest percentage increase in renewable energy generation at 45% from April to August 2025, generating 26.2 billion units (BU), up from 18.1 BU during the same period last year. Karnataka’s generation rose by 35% to 26 BU, while Gujarat and Rajasthan generated 30 BU each, marking increases of 31.5% and 23.7%, respectively.

Himachal Pradesh, which largely relies on hydro power while lacking significant wind or solar capacity, ranked third in renewable energy-based electricity generation. The state generated 27.6 BU in April-August 2025, a 4.2% increase compared to the previous year.

This information highlights the evolving landscape of renewable energy in India, showcasing Maharashtra’s ascent and Tamil Nadu’s recent challenges.
