Karnataka is set to roll out a Comprehensive Horticulture Development Scheme – 2.0 with an allocation of ₹95 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26, aimed at introducing technological advancements to farmers.

During the state budget session for 2025-26, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized the pivotal role of horticulture in enhancing farmers’ income. He stated, “Given the substantial contribution of horticultural crops, the Comprehensive Horticulture Development Scheme – 2.0 will be implemented to ensure that farmers can access advancements in technology related to value addition and processing.”

Additionally, a Knowledge Cell will be established in collaboration with private sector partners by the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology. This initiative aims to equip farmers with timely data regarding production levels, crop health, and market trends for horticultural crops, utilizing satellite technology and modern tools. Moreover, a seed bank will be created to preserve 20 Geographical Indication (GI) registered and other indigenous crops that are nearing extinction.

Siddaramaiah also announced plans for research and conservation efforts to safeguard Byadagi chili from diseases such as leaf curl and thrips. An investment of ₹426 crore will be allocated under the micro irrigation scheme to assist 52,000 farmers financially.

He acknowledged that over 200,000 areca nut farmers in the Malenadu region are facing hardships due to leaf spot disease, and ₹62 crore has been earmarked for plant protection strategies to combat this issue. Furthermore, the government is aware of black-headed caterpillar infestations in coconut-growing areas and will implement protective measures following a scientific survey based on the survey outcomes.

To promote organic farming and millet production, an Organic and Millet Hub will be established with a budget of ₹20 crore. This hub aims to address the supply-demand gap for these crops and create improved market facilities for farmers.
