New Delhi: Stellantis to Launch Next Global Jeep SUV on Tata Motors’ ARGOS Platform

Stellantis, a prominent global automotive manufacturer, has announced significant plans for the Indian automotive market. The next global Jeep SUV will utilize Tata Motors’ ARGOS platform. This initiative aims not only to leverage the existing chassis but to design, engineer, and manufacture the new Jeep in India before exporting it to over 50 countries, including markets in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and South America.

The announcement was made during Stellantis’ 2026 Investor Day, emphasizing the collaboration with Tata Motors to develop this new Jeep, which is slated for a 2028 introduction.

Tata’s ARGOS Platform Selected for the New Jeep

While Stellantis has not officially confirmed the platform’s name, industry insiders are pointing to ARGOS—the new architecture Tata introduced with the Sierra. The acronym ARGOS stands for All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy, and Geometry Scalable. This platform is designed to accommodate various powertrains, including petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric options. Additionally, it includes built-in all-wheel drive, an essential feature for Jeep’s requirement for at least one true 4×4 model globally.

Tata Will Provide the Engine

In addition to the platform, Tata Motors will supply its 1.5-litre turbocharged direct-injection (TGDI) petrol engine for the new SUV. This engine is already in use in Tata’s recent models and complies with tough Euro 7 and BS7 emission standards, making it suitable for both Indian and international markets.

It is important to clarify that this collaboration does not constitute a full joint development. Tata is responsible for providing the platform and engine. In contrast, Jeep will oversee everything related to vehicle design, engineering, interiors, and product development, without Tata’s direct involvement in the final product’s characteristics or market performance.

Reason for Choosing ARGOS

Stellantis evaluated numerous options for the new SUV’s platform. Although the global STLA-M architecture was considered, it was ultimately deemed too expensive to localize for India and emerging markets. Creating an entirely new platform was also rejected due to excessive time and financial investment. Furthermore, the Citroen platform currently utilized by Stellantis in India did not meet Jeep’s specific requirements, particularly concerning all-wheel drive and the advanced electronics and connected technology needed for future models.

Manufactured in India, Exported Globally

In contrast, the ARGOS platform meets all necessary criteria, featuring a modern electrical system, AWD support, and adaptability for a range of powertrains from petrol to electric. Production of the new Jeep will occur at the Ranjangaon plant near Pune, which is already a joint venture between Tata and Stellantis, manufacturing vehicles for both brands. Stellantis aims to increase local sourcing from approximately 65% to nearly 90% with this new model, which will help reduce costs and reinforce India’s reputation as a manufacturing hub.

This partnership has the potential to impact both companies significantly. For Jeep, this model will serve as a crucial addition to its portfolio in India, particularly given the competitive landscape and declining performance of models like the Compass and Meridian. For Tata Motors, this collaboration is an endorsement of its engineering capabilities, demonstrating that global automakers are placing confidence in Indian innovation.

Future of Jeep and Tata Motors

This development indicates that Indian automotive technology is gaining international recognition. Tata Motors joins an exclusive group of manufacturers whose homegrown platforms have been chosen for global products.

When the new Jeep is launched in 2028, it promises to be one of the most significant Made-in-India vehicles to enter global markets.
