Israeli Ultr nationalists Raise Controversy with Racist Slogans at Jerusalem Day March

Israeli ultranationalists gathered in Jerusalem’s Old City for the annual Jerusalem Day parade, where participants chanted phrases such as “Death to Arabs” and “May your villages burn.” Tens of thousands of Israelis, predominantly teenagers and young adults, participated in the event, which commemorates the “reunification” of Jerusalem following its capture in the 1967 war. However, the annexation of East Jerusalem, home to a largely Palestinian population, is considered illegal under international law by the United Nations. Throughout the march, many Palestinian residents opted to remain indoors and closed their shops, as authorities sometimes mandated business closures to maintain order. Incidents of violence have been reported during previous marches, with ultranationalists often directing hostility toward Palestinians. This year’s event coincided with heightened tensions in the region, including ongoing conflicts related to Gaza. Activists from the Israeli-Palestinian grassroots movement Standing Together were present, aiming to protect Palestinian-owned businesses and residents from harassment. Journalists covering the event also reported encountering aggression from participants, further illustrating the charged atmosphere of the march.
