Rajasthan Royals Defeat Punjab Kings in IPL 2026 Showdown

New Delhi: Rajasthan Royals secured their victory over Punjab Kings, handing them their first defeat of the 2026 Indian Premier League, by successfully chasing down 223 runs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, on Tuesday, April 28. A key factor in this win was the partnership between Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey, who collectively scored 77 runs without losing their wicket, sealing the match for the Royals with four balls to spare.

The Royals’ middle order had faced intense scrutiny prior to this match, mainly due to the heavy reliance on openers Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The pair set a dynamic tone for the innings with a rapid 51-run partnership in just 20 balls. Sooryavanshi contributed 43 runs off 16 balls while Jaiswal compiled 51 runs from 27 deliveries before the team lost captain Riyan Parag, which posed a potential threat of middle-order collapse.

With 72 runs still needed from the last 42 balls, the middle-order pressure intensified. However, Ferreira and Dubey came together for a resilient partnership of 78 runs. Dubey’s quick-fire 31 off 12 balls and Ferreira’s composed 52 off 26 balls—culminating in a victorious six—were instrumental in the Royals’ success.

Following this triumph, Rajasthan Royals climbed to third place in the points table, now holding 12 points from nine matches, a rise from their previous fourth position. They surpassed Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have accumulated 10 points from eight games.

Punjab Kings remain at the top of the table with 13 points from eight matches, trailed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, also at 12 points from eight matches. The current standings see the Gujarat Titans in fifth place with eight points from eight matches, while Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals both have six points from eight games.

At the bottom of the table are Kolkata Knight Riders, with five points from eight matches, followed by Mumbai Indians with four points from seven, and Lucknow Super Giants, also with four points, but from eight matches.
