India Limits Silver Jewelry Imports Until March 2026 to Combat FTA Abuse

The government announced on Wednesday that it has implemented import restrictions on plain silver jewellery, effective until March 31, 2026, according to a notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

These measures are designed to prevent the misuse of free trade agreements (FTAs) and to address the significant increase in imports of silver presented as finished jewellery. The import policy has shifted from “free” to “restricted,” meaning that goods falling under this category will now require a government-issued license.

The decision follows a notable rise in imports of plain silver jewellery under preferential duty exemptions during the April-June quarter of 2024-25 compared to the same period in 2025-26. Officials have stated that these imports, which bypass FTA regulations, have been detrimental to domestic manufacturers and represent a significant threat to employment in the jewellery sector.

The government believes that these restrictions will establish a level playing field for Indian jewellery manufacturers. The aim is to protect the interests of small and medium enterprises while securing livelihood opportunities for workers in the industry.
