Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met on Friday to discuss ways to strengthen their bilateral strategic ties. During their meeting, they touched upon various important issues such as defense, trade, and clean energy.

In a subtle reference to China, Chancellor Scholz emphasized the need to avoid dependence on a single country, especially in critical areas like raw materials and technologies. He highlighted the importance of engaging with India more in business, as the bilateral trade between the two countries has exceeded $30 billion.

Prime Minister Modi, on the other hand, presented India as a hub for diversification and de-risking in global trade and manufacturing. He encouraged German businesses to invest in India and leverage its potential as a manufacturing destination for the world.

Chancellor Scholz also expressed optimism about the possibility of a free trade agreement between the European Union and India, suggesting that it could be achieved in months rather than years. He referred to India as an “anchor of stability” in the region, underscoring the country’s importance on the global stage.

Both leaders emphasized the strong partnership between India and Germany, highlighting the increased cooperation in defense and security. They signed several agreements and treaties to further enhance their ties, including those related to mutual legal assistance, exchange of classified information, green hydrogen collaboration, innovation and technology, and research and development on advanced materials.

During a joint briefing, Chancellor Scholz echoed India’s stance on promoting lasting peace in Ukraine and reiterated the need for global security and stability. The leaders co-chaired the seventh round of India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations, acknowledging the significant progress made in various sectors through the partnership between the two countries.
