A 32-year-old Muslim man, identified as Sheru Susadiya from Multanpura in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district, was reportedly lynched in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara by individuals claiming to be cow vigilantes who wrongfully accused him of cattle smuggling. The incident took place last week, according to a report by The Indian Express.

In response to the attack, Bhilwara police have arrested five suspects and filed a First Information Report (FIR) under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempted murder, voluntary causing hurt, wrongful restraint, extortion, and unlawful assembly.

The FIR was lodged by Manzoor Pemla, Sheru’s cousin. He recounted that Sheru and his associate, Mohsin Dol, had purchased a bull at the Lambiya cattle fair in Bhilwara on September 16. While they were returning home in a pickup truck around 3 a.m., a silver camper began tailing them. The vehicle subsequently overtook their truck and blocked the road, soon joined by several men on motorcycles.

According to the complaint, the mob forcibly removed Sheru and Mohsin from their vehicle and began to assault them, accusing them of cow slaughter. Despite their explanations that the bull was legally acquired from the fair, the attackers ignored their pleas, said Manzoor.

The FIR names several suspects, including Deva Gurjar, Kunal Malpura, Pradeep Rajpurohit, and Nitesh Saini. While Mohsin managed to escape, Sheru suffered severe injuries during the assault. Manzoor claimed that they robbed Sheru of ₹36,000 and that Kunal later called him from Sheru’s phone, demanding ₹50,000 for his safe return and threatening police action if he did not comply.

Sheru’s phone was subsequently switched off. When the family could not locate him or their vehicle, a call from Banera police station around 3 p.m. informed them that Sheru had been hospitalized in Bhilwara with critical head injuries. By the time the family arrived, he had already been referred to Jaipur’s SMS Hospital for neurosurgical treatment. The referral slip from the Bhilwara government hospital noted a “head injury.”

After fighting for three days for his life, Sheru succumbed to his injuries on Friday. He leaves behind his wife, Naseem, and their two young children.

In addition to the FIR related to the lynching, police have opened a separate investigation into the alleged cow smuggling.
