Hyderabad: Sunrisers Struggle Continues in IPL 2026

After suffering a defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their opening match, Sunrisers Hyderabad bounced back with a victory over Kolkata Knight Riders. However, expectations were high as the team faced Lucknow Super Giants at home, yet the batting lineup faltered again. Following the loss of four quick wickets, Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy stepped up to stabilize the innings, helping the team reach 156 runs in their first innings, which ultimately proved insufficient.

In the aftermath of the defeat, Klaasen assessed Hyderabad’s performance in the tournament, noting that with only one win in three matches, the team needs to establish rhythm to remain competitive for the playoffs. He expressed that significant improvements are necessary within the batting unit.

“Our batting has been good so far, but we’ve left about 40 runs on the table in three games,” Klaasen remarked in the JioStar Press Room ahead of IPL 2026 Rivalry Week. “We need to bat better. In the two games where we struggled, we didn’t execute well with the bat. The bowlers, especially the pacers, have been fantastic. We need to aim for 220-230 runs to give our bowlers a chance to defend.”

Klaasen Calls for Fielding Enhancements

The former South African international also addressed Hyderabad’s shortcomings in the fielding department. He emphasized that missed opportunities have hindered the team’s performance and stressed the need for improvement in all aspects of the game.

“Our fielding has been poor, and that’s affecting us,” Klaasen stated. “I would rate us 6 out of 10 so far. We’ve played brilliant cricket in phases but faltered during crucial moments. The bowlers are executing the plan well, and while the batting is doing adequately, we need to secure our catches. To elevate our rating to 8 or 9, we need to build momentum and integrate all three aspects cohesively.”

Currently, Klaasen is the leading run-scorer for Hyderabad, with a total of 145 runs in three matches, making him the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament.
