Hamas to release 34 captives in ceasefire agreement, sources say

Hamas has announced its willingness to release 34 hostages as part of a potential ceasefire agreement with Israel. Reports from Reuters and AFP state that the Palestinian group has agreed to release the captives in the first phase of a proposed exchange deal.

The initial swap would involve the release of all women, children, elderly individuals, and sick captives currently in Gaza, according to an unnamed Hamas official cited by AFP. However, a ceasefire agreement is contingent upon Israel agreeing to a permanent ceasefire and withdrawing from Gaza, as reported by another Hamas official to Reuters.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has stated that Hamas has not yet provided a list of captives for potential release. Negotiations for a ceasefire deal are ongoing in Qatar, where the Biden administration is mediating the talks in the hopes of reaching an agreement before Trump assumes office on January 20.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Doha, Ali Hashem, highlighted the significant differences that still need to be addressed between the two sides. The ultimate decision rests with Netanyahu, as Hamas has challenged Israel to progress to the next stage of negotiations.

The looming threat of consequences from Trump if a deal is not reached adds pressure to the negotiations. With ongoing Israeli bombardment in Gaza and a rising death toll among Palestinians, the urgency for a ceasefire agreement is critical.

Despite the release of captives by Hamas, the continuation of hostilities underscores the necessity for a lasting peace agreement. Hamas seeks a clear commitment from Israel to ensure a permanent ceasefire and withdrawal from Gaza to end the cycle of violence.
