Gaurav Luthra and Saurabh Luthra, who co-own the Goa nightclub where a fire earlier this month killed 25 people, arrived in Delhi on Tuesday after being deported from Thailand.

A Goa Police team was stationed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport to arrest them as soon as they landed.

The blaze broke out around midnight on December 7 at a club called Birch by Romeo Lane near Baga beach, among Goa’s most popular tourist locations. The deaths included 20 staff members and five tourists.

According to a preliminary inquiry, “electric firecrackers” used inside the venue set off the fire.

When the fire broke out, the brothers were in the national capital.

The Goa Police alleged that they left India for Thailand within hours of the incident. But the brothers’ lawyers told a Delhi court that they had not fled and had travelled to Thailand for business reasons.

On December 11, a Delhi court refused their plea for transit anticipatory bail.

That same day, Thailand Police detained the brothers in Phuket after India cancelled their passports and sent a dossier formally requesting their deportation.

They are expected to be produced before a Delhi court, where the Goa Police will seek transit remand to take them to Goa for continued investigation.

On December 7, Goa Police registered a criminal case against the brothers, alleging that they held a fire show at the club without proper safety measures or sufficient fire-fighting equipment.

They have been booked under sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash or negligent acts that endanger life, and negligent conduct involving fire.
