A multi-vehicle hit-and-run crash on I-15 southbound near Jean, Nevada, has left five individuals injured and resulted in a diesel spill across the highway. The incident, which occurred early Friday morning, involved an initial three-car collision followed by a secondary crash that struck emergency vehicles responding to the scene.

Details of the Incident

The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) reported that the initial crash took place at 12:16 a.m. close to mile marker 7, just north of the California border. Emergency crews arrived swiftly, but at 12:36 a.m., a secondary hit-and-run incident occurred when an unidentified vehicle collided with a Clark County Fire Department ambulance, a fire truck, and a parked Chevrolet Malibu. Following the collision, the driver responsible for the secondary crash fled the scene on foot.

Injuries and Emergency Response

In total, five individuals sustained injuries from the second collision. One victim was airlifted by Life Flight helicopter due to their severe condition, while the other four were transported to area hospitals by ground ambulances. Fortunately, all first responders from the Clark County Fire Department were unharmed in the course of their emergency response efforts. The cleanup process included addressing a large diesel spill from the damaged fire truck, temporarily shutting down southbound lanes of the highway.

Current Situation and Traffic Advisory

After several hours of closure, southbound I-15 has since reopened. Traffic was diverted off the highway at the Jean exit (Exit 12) as cleanup crews worked to mitigate the diesel spill. Motorists traveling between Las Vegas and Southern California were advised to steer clear of the area to avoid delays.

Why This Is Trending

The crash and its aftermath have garnered significant attention, particularly due to the severity of the injuries involved and the dramatic nature of multiple hit-and-run incidents occurring in quick succession. Indian audiences have been particularly engaged since incidents of road safety and emergency response are critical topics due to increasing concern over vehicular accidents at home. The escalation of such events globally prompts questions about public safety and emergency preparedness.
