Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the significance of utilizing technology effectively in policing during his address at the annual event of the Indian Police Foundation (IPF) at the Maharashtra Police Headquarters in South Mumbai on Saturday. He stated that a proactive and fearless approach to technology could elevate policing to new heights and highlighted the importance of periodically updating the organizational structure of the police force to enhance its agility.

“Technology is like a horse. The horse rider determines the destination. If we use technology fearlessly and correctly, we can advance policing,” said Fadnavis, who also oversees the home portfolio. He referenced past technological advancements, recalling the initial apprehension surrounding computers and their potential impact on employment. “When computers were introduced, there were concerns about job loss. However, the IT sector thrived, with significant contributions from Indians in Silicon Valley,” he noted.

Now, with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Fadnavis acknowledged that many questions remain. “We are at the brink of a new technological era, with numerous uncertainties,” he remarked. He reiterated the analogy of technology as a horse, asserting that if the rider maintains control and direction, the horse will expedite its journey. Fadnavis further pointed out the rapid changes in the world, suggesting that long-standing predictions about crime trends have evolved over time.

The Chief Minister’s comments highlight the role of leadership in technology integration within the police force, aiming to inspire a thoughtful approach to the challenges and opportunities presented by new innovations.
