Fear and Hostility: An Atrocious Incident in Juhu

An elderly Muslim shop owner in Juhu, Mumbai, Rafat Hussain, experienced a disturbing encounter of religious abuse and harassment within his own showroom, Mannat Ethnic Designer. This incident, which unfolded on June 13, has drawn national attention with a viral video depicting Hussain’s troubling experience, raising alarm about the increasing hostilities faced by Muslim communities in India.

The Incident: From Customer to Target

According to Hussain, four women entered his shop around 3:30 PM, initially inquiring about shervanis and suits for a wedding. What began as a typical shopping interaction quickly escalated to verbal abuse, as the women began to hurl derogatory comments aimed at his religious identity. “They said you are a Muslim, you live in a certain way, and you do things in the wrong way,” Hussain detailed in the video.

Feeling increasingly threatened, he fled to the nearest police station for protection. Within about 25 minutes, a mob of nearly 150 individuals congregated outside the station, chanting slogans reminiscent of communal tensions that have periodically flared up across the country. Hussain reported that approximately 20-25 young men tried to enter the station with the intent to attack him. Although police did escort him to safety, he claimed the officers were unwilling to take decisive action against the harassers.

Police Response and Community Reaction

Compounding the distressing situation, Hussain noted that the four women accused him by filing a First Information Report (FIR) at the police station. During his time there, he sought assistance from All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leaders, Waris Pathan and Imtiaz Jaleel. However, Hussain alleged that the police officer on duty, Bushan More, displayed indifference, even denying the existence of the crowd despite the visible unrest.

Hussain expressed considerable fear for his safety and the viability of his business. “My only crime is that I am sitting here wearing a beard and a cap,” he lamented, underscoring the growing anxiety among many Muslims in India who feel targeted based on their religious identity. He suspects that the entire incident was premeditated, citing the swift mobilization of the large crowd as indicative of a planned attack on him.

Rising Tensions and Social Media Outcry

This shocking incident has reignited conversations on social media about the religious discrimination and hostility that minorities in India, particularly Muslims, face. Many online commentators drew attention to the broader issue of communal targeting, particularly in a socio-political landscape increasingly influenced by the ideologies of Hindutva, promoted by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other associated groups.

The situation not only highlights the struggles faced by individuals like Hussain but also raises fundamental questions about freedom of religion and safety in day-to-day life for Muslim communities within India’s pluralistic society. The resonance of this incident at a national level brings to light the urgent need for systemic change in policing and community relations.

Why It Matters

The incident involving Rafat Hussain is emblematic of a rising tide of religious intolerance that many believe is being fostered under the current government. It brings into focus the alarming marginalization of minority communities, which can lead to economic boycotts and social exclusion. Such developments threaten not only individual rights but also the integrity of India’s multicultural framework. For global observers, this situation underscores the challenges in sustaining diversity within democratic societies when political ideologies prioritize majoritarianism over inclusivity.
