Congress Questions PM’s Silence on Garg During Assam Visit

Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi on Monday questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi didn’t pay tributes to Assam’s cultural icon, Zubeen Garg, during his recent trip to the State.

Mr. Modi was in Assam on December 20 and 21 to inaugurate key developmental projects, including the new airport terminal in Guwahati and a fertilizer plant in Namrup in Upper Assam.

“The PM was in Assam for two days, and addressed the people on several occasions. As expected, the speeches focused on attacking the Congress party and presenting a distorted version of Indian history,” Mr. Gogoi, who is also the Assam Congress chief, said in a post on X.

“However, it is deeply unfortunately that the PM did not pay tributes to Garg,” he added.

Mr. Gogoi said the PM neither met the family of Garg nor offered any words of empathy to the fans of the singer in the State.

He also brought out contrasts between the visits of Mr. Modi’s and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He  also sought to draw parallels between the PM’s Assam and Manipur visits.

“When the Prime Minister visited Manipur, the youth there felt as if they are mere props in a drama. A drama in which Prime Minister Modi is the director, producer, technician and, of course, the lead actor,” he said.

“On the other hand, when the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi visited Assam, he paid tributes to Zubeen Da at Zubeen Khetra, met his family and demanded justice for him. The LoP visited Manipur not once but twice. He met the survivors of the violence. In millennial terms, Mr. Gandhi gets the Northeast,” Mr. Gogoi added.
