CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay reaffirmed his support for the global Tamil diaspora on Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to their rights. In a post on social media platform ‘X’, the leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) stated, “Let us hold the memories of Mullivaikkal in our hearts. We will always stand by the rights of our Tamil kindred living across the seas.”

Annually observed by Sri Lankan Tamils worldwide, May 18 marks Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day, commemorating the tragic end of the Sri Lankan Civil War in 2009. This conflict concluded in Mullivaikkal, a small coastal village in the Mullaitivu district, with the death of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

According to United Nations estimates, between 40,000 and 70,000 Tamil civilians lost their lives during the war’s final stages. This tragic event has turned Mullivaikkal into a poignant symbol of wartime atrocities and the suffering endured by civilians.
