Chennai Super Kings Secure First Win of IPL 2026 Against Delhi Capitals

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) achieved their first victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by 23 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 11. After three consecutive losses to begin the season, this win marks a significant turnaround for CSK, also ending their home losing streak that had reached six games, encompassing five losses from the previous season and one from this season.

CSK set a target of 212 runs, successfully bowling out DC for 189. Sanju Samson was the standout performer with the bat, scoring an impressive unbeaten 115 runs off 56 deliveries, which included 15 boundaries and four sixes. Following a slow start from captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who managed only 15 runs off 18 balls, Samson formed a formidable partnership of 113 runs for the second wicket with Ayush Mhatre. Mhatre contributed significantly with 59 runs off 36 balls before he was retired out in the 18th over to allow hard-hitter Shivam Dube to finish the innings, where Dube scored 20 runs off 10 balls.

In response, DC had a vigorous start but faced setbacks as Khaleel Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj, and Gurjapneet Singh turned the tide for CSK. Khaleel struck first, dismissing KL Rahul for 18 runs, followed by Kamboj claiming Pathum Nissanka. Debutant Gurjapneet made an immediate impact by taking out DC captain Axar Patel with a stunning catch by Sarfaraz Khan on his first ball. Jamie Overton further bolstered CSK’s bowling attack by taking out Sameer Rizvi.

Tristan Stubbs kept DC’s hopes alive with his half-century, partnering with David Miller for a crucial 45 runs for the fifth wicket. Stubbs scored 60 runs off 38 balls before Overton dismissed him in the 19th over, effectively sealing the match for CSK as DC was bowled out for 189.

This victory not only provides CSK with their first win of the season but also highlights Sanju Samson’s remarkable achievement, as he became the first centurion of IPL 2026, surpassing MS Dhoni’s historical record.
