Chelsea Football Club has dismissed head coach Liam Rosenior following a disappointing run of five consecutive defeats in the Premier League, marking the club’s worst performance in 114 years. The decision came after an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion prompted a high-profile meeting among the club’s management.
Despite initial support for the English manager, the recent dismal results and performances led the club to conclude that a change was necessary. As it stands, Chelsea is currently positioned seventh in the league, trailing seven points behind a potential UEFA Champions League spot.
The club released an official statement, expressing gratitude to Rosenior and his staff for their efforts during his tenure. It stated, “Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior. On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to place on record our gratitude to Liam and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club. Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season.”
The statement continued, “This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly; however, recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.”
In the interim, Calum McFarlane has been appointed as the new head coach until the end of the season. McFarlane, who previously served as Rosenior’s assistant, joined the Chelsea Academy to coach the Under-21s. He has also held positions as head coach of Southampton’s Under-21s and at Manchester City’s academy.
McFarlane had a brief stint as head coach earlier in the season when he led the team to a 1-1 draw against Manchester City. The club confirmed that this arrangement is temporary, with plans to secure a new head coach over the summer.
