Mohammad Athar Hussain, a 50-year-old cloth vendor, died late Friday night at Biharsharif Sadar Hospital after sustaining injuries from a brutal mob lynching in the Roh police station area of Nawada district. The attack occurred on December 5 as he was returning from Dumri village, where he was confronted by a group of six to seven men who questioned his identity before violently assaulting him.
In a video recorded during his treatment, Hussain detailed the attack, stating that the assailants forced him off his bicycle, robbed him, and took him to a nearby room where he was tied up and beaten with rods and bricks. He recounted how the mob searched his pockets and demanded to know his religious identity before inflicting severe injuries. They broke his fingers, trampled on his chest, and attempted to set him ablaze by pouring petrol over him.
“The attackers used pliers to crush my feet, fingers, and ears, striking me repeatedly with bricks,” Hussain stated. He described the brutality of the incident, saying, “They stood on my chest and trampled me. I was bleeding from my mouth, and they used bricks to beat me as well. Someone called the cops, and then I was taken away.”
Originally from Gagan Dih village in Nalanda district, Hussain had lived and worked in Nawada for nearly 20 years, providing for his family through his clothing business. His wife, Shabnam Praveen, filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Roh police station, alleging that the violence was motivated by hatred tied to his religious identity. She claimed that authorities had filed a separate FIR against her husband on the day of the attack, which she believes was an attempt to divert attention from the lynching incident.
Hussain’s family insists the assault was not a random act of violence but rooted in Islamophobia, and they are calling for swift justice as police investigations continue. So far, four suspects—Sonu Kumar, Ranjan Kumar, Sachin Kumar, and Shri Kumar—have been apprehended, and authorities are actively searching for additional individuals believed to be involved in the attack.
The incident has raised serious concerns about violence against Muslims in India, igniting discussions on social media and within various communities.
