On the occasion of International Literacy Day 2025, we explore six Bollywood films that offer valuable insights on literacy.

Literacy is a fundamental right that shapes our identity, enhances our mindset, and expands opportunities for personal growth. Celebrated annually on September 8, International Literacy Day aims to emphasize the significance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies.

In observance of this day, we highlight films that subtly impart literacy lessons, revealing new meanings with each viewing.

Black (2005)
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, this film showcases the transformative power of education through the relationship between a teacher and a deaf-blind student, played by Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji. It underscores the dedication needed to overcome barriers to literacy and communication.

Taare Zameen Par (2007)
Starring Aamir Khan, this film addresses the challenges of dyslexia and diverse learning needs. It emphasizes the necessity of personalized teaching and celebrates the unique potential of each child rather than concentrating solely on academic performance.

3 Idiots (2009)
Another Aamir Khan film, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, critiques the competitive nature of India’s educational system and the pressure it places on students. The movie champions learning driven by curiosity and critical thinking, contrasting the success of passionate learners with those fixated on rote memorization for grades.

English Vinglish (2012)
This film features Sridevi as a homemaker who embarks on a journey to learn English. It highlights how language acquisition can foster self-confidence and help individuals overcome personal challenges.

Super 30 (2019)
Starring Hrithik Roshan, the film tells the true story of mathematician Anand Kumar, who mentors underprivileged students for the IIT entrance exams. It emphasizes education as a pathway to social progress and empowerment for marginalized communities.

Chhichhore (2019)
Featuring late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, this film tackles academic pressures faced by students. It encourages resilience and emphasizes the importance of focusing on the learning process and personal development over mere academic results.

This International Literacy Day, these films remind us of the critical role literacy plays in shaping lives and communities.
