The BCCI has decided to eliminate the Impact Player rule for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. The Indian Board informed state associations of this decision for the domestic T20 tournament.

Niraj Odedra, head coach of Saurashtra, expressed his approval of the change, stating, “It is a positive move as the ICC does not have this rule in major tournaments. This change will benefit cricketers aspiring to play for India as they progress from the domestic season.”

Although the Impact Player rule has been scrapped for the SMAT, it will remain in place for the Indian Premier League for the next three seasons. The rule has been a topic of debate, particularly concerning its impact on the role of all-rounders in Indian cricket. National team captain Rohit Sharma criticized the rule, stating that it could hinder the development of all-rounders and detract from the essence of the game.

Introduced a few years ago in the SMAT, the rule was later extended to the IPL. The tournament is scheduled to commence on November 23, with the final slated for December 15.
