Ayush Mhatre to miss games; MS Dhoni’s injury return timeline remains unclear

New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) emerging player Ayush Mhatre will be sidelined for several matches due to a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL 2026 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. Mhatre injured himself while attempting a quick double alongside teammate Ruturaj Gaikwad during the second innings.

The 18-year-old required medical assistance and was dismissed on the subsequent delivery. CSK batting coach Mike Hussey discussed the injury’s severity, stating, “Obviously, a hamstring tear. I don’t know how bad it is. I’m sure we’ll scan him probably tomorrow or the next day. It looks pretty bad, unfortunately. And he’s going to be a big, big loss because he’s been in really nice touch for us,” Hussey remarked in the post-match press conference.

According to a report from Cricbuzz, Mhatre is scheduled for scans on April 20 to assess the injury’s extent. Hussey hinted at a likely absence for Mhatre, noting, “He’s an exciting young talent, but it’s going to give someone else an opportunity. So that’s exciting as well. We’ve got some really good players that haven’t been able to get an opportunity. And so it’s going to be exciting for one of those guys.”

Further complicating matters for CSK is the uncertain status of MS Dhoni, who has yet to participate in any matches this season due to a calf injury. Hussey expressed uncertainty about Dhoni’s return, saying, “Not really, I’m not sure.” He added, “He’s progressing nicely with his rehab, and I’m happy with how he’s batting.”

Hussey noted that Dhoni needs to improve his running capabilities to contribute effectively in the latter stages of innings, stating, “He just needs to build confidence in his running and improve his speed. I don’t know when he’ll play, but I’m hoping it’s sooner rather than later, like all the fans.”

Despite his injury, Dhoni traveled with the team to Mumbai, where CSK is set to face off against Mumbai Indians next. He had accompanied the team to Hyderabad for the SRH match but did not take the field.
