Rohit Sharma: The Challenges of Test Captaincy in 2024

Rohit Sharma’s tenure as Test captain of the Indian cricket team is under intense scrutiny following a series of disappointing performances. After a shocking 0-3 Test series loss at home against New Zealand and a precarious standing in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against Australia, Rohit’s leadership is being questioned both by fans and former players alike. The once highly celebrated captain is now facing an uphill battle to keep his position amid rising concerns about his performance as a batsman and leader in red-ball cricket.

The Current Crisis

In the post-match analysis following the defeat to New Zealand, Sharma remarked, “We are allowed one such performance in 12 years.” While many have historically defended his leadership based on India’s strong performance in red-ball cricket, the recent results have cast doubt on his approach. Notably, India was rescued by rain during the third Test match against Australia, a fact that has not overlooked by critics.

Since taking over from Virat Kohli, Rohit has indeed led India to success in white-ball formats, culminating in their T20 World Cup victory in 2024. However, the Test format demands a different set of skills and mental fortitude—qualities that seem to be dwindling in Rohit’s current performances.

Age and Performance

At the age of 34, Rohit is navigating the latter stages of his cricketing career, making it increasingly difficult for him to meet the demands of Test cricket. In the current 2024-25 season, he has played six matches, accumulating only 142 runs—an average of just 23.67—with one half-century. This alarming dip in form raises the question: can age satisfactorily explain a decline in performance, or is it indicative of deeper issues?

Rohit’s struggles have drawn comparisons to other renowned captains who led by example. Virat Kohli, for instance, consistently performed at an elite level during his captaincy and was integral to India’s success. In contrast, Rohith’s leadership has not translated into personal run-scoring, with only a single score of fifty since the beginning of the season.

Captaincy Record Under Fire

Over the course of 23 Test matches as captain, Rohit has seen India secure victories in only 12 encounters—raising eyebrows given that historically, Indian teams have been formidable at home. Alarmingly, during his captaincy, India has lost five Tests at home. This statistic presents Rohit’s tenure in stark contrast to former captains like MS Dhoni, who experienced significantly fewer losses at home.

Critics have noted that Rohit’s numbers—1232 runs at an average of 32.42 with four centuries—are below the standard expected of a player in his role. Comparatively, other captains such as Pat Cummins and Ben Stokes have established themselves as crucial players for their teams, blending captaincy with batting performance effectively.

A Path Forward

As the World Test Championship 2023-25 progresses, the pressure is mounting on Rohit to deliver results. Team India remains in contention but is no longer seen as the front-runner. With only three Test captains from other teams boasting a lower batting average than Rohit in 2024, serious questions arise about whether he can reclaim his form or if a change in leadership is necessary.

Should Rohit choose to reflect on his role and decide on his future, it would be simultaneously wise and prudent to consider stepping back from leadership in favor of focusing solely on his batting. This move could potentially allow for a fresh leadership approach within the team, potentially revitalizing India’s performance as they look to improve their standing in the World Test Championship.

Conclusion

Rohit Sharma’s journey as the Test captain has been marred by challenges, raising vital questions about his suitability for the role. While he has excelled in shorter formats, Test cricket demands a different pedigree—one that Rohit is struggling to provide in the current landscape. As cricket fans and analysts continue to dissect his leadership and performance, the Indian cricketing community eagerly awaits his next move—both on and off the field.
