NaBFID Secures $750 Million in First-Ever US Dollar Bond Offering

The National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) has made significant strides in international finance by successfully issuing its debut US dollar bond. Raising $750 million through a 10-year benchmark bond, this issuance marks a pivotal moment for NaBFID, showcasing India’s appetite for global markets and boosting its infrastructure financing capabilities.

Debut Bond Issuance Overview

NaBFID’s inaugural bond issuance was priced at 105 basis points over US Treasuries, resulting in a coupon rate of 6.122%. It is notable that this bond is listed on prominent GIFT IFSC exchanges, specifically India INX and NSE International Exchange (NSE-IX). This successful issuance is the first drawdown under NaBFID’s ambitious $4 billion Global Medium-Term Note (GMTN) programme, which aims to facilitate further financing opportunities in global markets.

The bond, which matures on September 30, 2029, has garnered a BBB+ rating from CareEdge. Its anticipated inclusion in widely recognized emerging market indices—such as the Emerging Markets Bond Index (EMBI) and the JP Morgan Asian Credit Index (JACI)—demonstrates a strategic move towards enhancing NaBFID’s international credibility and institutional strength.

Investor Interest and Demand Distribution

The bond’s order book witnessed substantial interest from a diverse pool of investors, with US participants accounting for 55% of total demand. This was followed by interest from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (30%), as well as Asia (15%). The shift to a GMTN format is believed to have attracted American investors, creating a pathway for broader marketing and geographic diversification.

Rajkiran Rai G, Managing Director of NaBFID, expressed optimism regarding the investor response, stating, “This reflects their confidence in the Institution’s credit strength, institutional mandate, and India’s long-term infrastructure growth potential.” This sentiment underscores India’s ongoing infrastructure development needs and the growing trust international investors are placing in its economic possibilities.

Mitigating Currency Risks

One noteworthy aspect of this bond issuance is the complete hedging of principal currency risks. NaBFID has collaborated with the Reserve Bank of India to secure a five-year swap, effectively locking in the borrowing costs for the bond’s duration. This strategic approach not only mitigates the exchange rate volatility risks often associated with dollar-denominated debts but also enhances institutional credibility.

Monika Kalia, CFO of NaBFID, emphasized the importance of this transaction, stating it establishes a “…significant reference point for future foreign currency issuances.” With an annual requirement for $10–20 billion in infrastructure financing, NaBFID’s GMTN programme will diversify funding options beyond domestic markets, ultimately broaden its financial base.

What This Means

The successful issuance of NaBFID’s US dollar bond is a meaningful development for India’s infrastructure financing landscape. Given the country’s enormous infrastructure financing needs, this move opens up avenues for foreign investment, crucial for sustainable development. NaBFID’s ability to attract international investors could inspire greater confidence among other Indian institutions, leading to more dollar-denominated bonds in the future. Additionally, it may pave the way for improved credit ratings for Indian entities in global markets, reducing financing costs and enhancing economic growth.
