India aims to source up to 25% of its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports from the United States by 2027, a strategic shift intended to reduce its dependence on Middle Eastern suppliers and enhance trade relations with the U.S. This move comes in the wake of earlier supply disruptions that highlighted vulnerabilities in India’s energy supply chains.

Current LPG Supply and Consumption Landscape in India

The demand for LPG in India has been significant, accounting for about 66% of the country’s LPG consumption. In 2025, India imported approximately 21.85 million metric tons of LPG, with around 90% of that coming from the Middle East. However, geopolitical tensions, such as the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, have severely impacted these supplies, leading to a critical LPG shortage earlier this year. The Indian government was forced to implement emergency measures to redirect petrochemical feedstocks to households in need.

Strategic Shift Towards U.S. LPG Imports

To counter the supply disruptions, Indian state refiners, including Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp, and Hindustan Petroleum, are planning to issue tenders for U.S. LPG supplies within the next one to two months. A delegation from these companies is also expected to visit the United States next month for discussions on sourcing. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to diversify energy imports and secure a more stable supply chain.

As a testament to this strategy, U.S. LPG imports into India surged to over 1 million tons in June, marking a significant increase in energy purchases from the U.S. This development could potentially enable India to meet its 2026 annual contract target of 2.2 million tons ahead of schedule, as demand recovers following earlier shortages.

Trade Relations and Economic Implications

This pivot towards American LNG corroborates India’s broader goals to enhance trade ties with the U.S. New Delhi has pledged to increase its energy purchases from the U.S. by $10 billion to $25 billion in the near future, with both nations aiming to achieve $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. Efforts to consummate a long-awaited trade deal with Washington have gained momentum as India’s oil ministry seeks to address the trade surplus issue—a key concern from U.S. officials, particularly under the previous Trump administration.

Despite reduced imports earlier this year, projections indicate that India’s LPG demand could recover to approximately 31 million tons by 2027, with imports potentially rising to about 20 million tons that year. Junior oil minister Suresh Gopi recently emphasized the necessity of diversification in LPG imports to bolster supply security against geopolitical disruptions. This alignment of energy strategy and trade policy is crucial for India’s economic resilience.

What This Means

The drive towards U.S. LPG imports signifies a critical step for India in securing its energy supply chain against geopolitical instabilities. By reducing dependence on Middle Eastern sources, India can enhance its energy security, stabilize market prices, and create opportunities for diversifying its supply sources. Additionally, this initiative presents an economic opportunity to balance trade relations with the U.S., fostering deeper economic partnerships that can lead to increased investments and technological exchanges in the energy sector.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main reasons for India to diversify its LPG sources?

India aims to enhance its energy security and mitigate risks from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted supplies in the past.

How much LPG does India currently import from the U.S.?

U.S. LPG imports topped 1 million tons in June and are projected to surpass India’s initial 2026 annual-contract target of 2.2 million tons.

What impact did the geopolitical tensions have on India’s LPG supply?

Geopolitical tensions, including the Iran war and closure of the Strait of Hormuz, led to severe supply shortages in India, prompting government intervention to redirect petrochemical feedstocks for household use.

What are India’s future projections for LPG consumption?

India’s LPG consumption is expected to decline to about 30 million tons this year due to low supplies, but it may rise to approximately 31 million tons by 2027, with imports increasing to about 20 million tons as demand recovers.
