FPIs Shift to Net Sellers on Friday, Weekly Inflows Reach ₹19,778 Crore

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) concluded the trading week of July 24, 2026, on a cautious note, reverting to net sellers after a streak of inflows. Despite the negative turn on the final trading day, the week recorded a substantial cumulative inflow of nearly ₹20,000 crore across various sectors, driven predominantly by the debt market. However, rising geopolitical tensions and surging crude oil prices have started to cloud the outlook for Indian equities.

FPI Activity Overview

On July 24, FPIs withdrawn ₹4,669.50 crore, concluding four consecutive days of investment inflows. Breaking down the outflows, the equity market faced the brunt of this trend, registering an exodus of ₹2,607.28 crore. In the debt market, the segments struggled as well, with Debt-General witnessing a net outflow of ₹902.32 crore and Debt-VRR experiencing exits totaling ₹1,115.12 crore. Hybrid instruments also reflected negativity with an outflow of ₹47.36 crore.

In stark contrast, the lone performer on that day was Debt-FAR, which managed to secure a slight inflow of ₹6.81 crore. Despite the somber end to the week, the peak was seen on July 22, when FPIs infused a remarkable ₹14,788.06 crore—marking it as the strongest single-day inflow driven mainly by a robust ₹14,491.15 crore influx in Debt-General.

Driving Factors and Market Sentiment

The stock market’s positive momentum earlier in the week appeared to be fueled mainly by the debt market, with significant inflows seen each day. Monday, July 20, recorded a net investment of ₹5,408.11 crore, predominantly from debt, but equity recorded a minor outflow of ₹215.71 crore. Tuesday witnessed net inflows of ₹2,594.40 crore, primarily driven by equity investments, while Thursday brought in a modest ₹1,657.41 crore, courtesy of Debt-FAR inflows. The pressures from rising crude oil prices and a depreciating rupee, along with climbing US bond yields, have compounded uncertainties for Indian equities.

Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, highlighted the ongoing robust debt inflows as a reaction to the recent taxation reforms introduced by the government. Nonetheless, he emphasized that emerging geopolitical tensions, particularly the escalation in West Asia and the consequent uptick in Brent crude prices, could negatively impact India’s macroeconomic stability if sustained.

Outlook and Future Implications

Market analysts predict a cautious approach from FPIs moving forward due to multiple influences. The recent climb in the US 10-year bond yield to 4.7% may deter foreign investment in emerging markets, including India. Additionally, Prabir Mukherjee from Bajaj Broking articulated that foreign institutional flows are expected to remain volatile until clarity on geopolitical stability and crude oil pricing is attained.

Looking ahead, the Q1 FY27 earnings, alongside developments in West Asia, are pivotal variables that could shape future FPI flows into Indian markets. Dr. Vijayakumar noted that stabilization or a decline in crude oil prices could potentially lead FPIs to become consistent buyers in India, further impacting market dynamics.

What This Means

The recent fluctuations in FPI activity highlight the interconnectedness of domestic markets with global factors such as geopolitical tensions and commodity prices. With FPIs pulling back from equity investments due to cautious sentiment driven by external conditions, investors should prepare for potential volatility. Understanding the dynamics of foreign investment will be crucial for market participants aiming to navigate the financial landscape in the coming months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs)?

FPIs are investors or investment funds that invest in a country’s financial assets, primarily in equities and fixed-income securities, without a direct investment in the assets. They play a significant role in providing liquidity to the markets.

Why did FPIs turn net sellers on July 24, 2026?

FPIs turned net sellers on July 24 due to a combination of rising crude oil prices, a weaker rupee, and increasing US bond yields, which dampened sentiments toward Indian equities.

What factors are influencing FPI flows to India?

Key factors include geopolitical tensions, crude oil prices, interest rates in developed markets, and changes in domestic economic policies, such as taxation reforms.

How do fluctuations in crude oil prices affect Indian markets?

Fluctuations in crude oil prices impact inflation, trade balance, and overall economic stability in India, influencing investment decisions of FPIs and investors alike.
