India’s brokerage firms showcased significant earnings recovery in the June quarter, driven by robust cash market activity and diversified revenue streams. Companies like Groww and ICICI Securities reported substantial profit growth, signaling a shift in the industry towards more sustainable business models that extend beyond traditional broking.

Performance Highlights of Major Brokerages

ICICI Securities demonstrated steady performance with a 7% year-on-year increase in net profit, reaching ₹417.96 crore, alongside a nearly 10% rise in revenue to ₹1,546.9 crore. The company’s growth underscores the ongoing recovery in the Indian brokerage landscape, which has benefitted from heightened retail participation in equity markets.

Leading the pack, Groww recorded a remarkable 94.4% surge in consolidated net profit to ₹735 crore, with operational revenues climbing by 66% to ₹1,501 crore. This growth was bolstered by increased operating leverage and contributions from newer services including margin trading facilities (MTF) and commodity derivatives. An EBITDA of ₹971 crore marked a more than doubling compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, Angel One also exhibited impressive growth, with net profit more than doubling to ₹231.4 crore. A 25.4% rise in total income to ₹1,434 crore was aided by a record funding book of ₹6,140 crore. The firm enjoyed a robust retail clientele, expanding its user base by 19% to 3.86 crore.

Trends in the Brokerage Industry

India’s brokerage sector is witnessing a significant shift as firms diversify their offerings, extending into wealth management, lending, and other fee-based services. This pivot is crucial in counteracting regulatory headwinds introduced in late 2024. Traditional brokers, while still growing steadily, face mounting pressure to innovate.

HDFC Securities, India’s leading full-service retail brokerage, reported a profit increase of 28% to ₹300 crore. Revenue rose by 30% to ₹950 crore, with nearly 96% of its 8 million customers using digital platforms for transactions. The move towards lower-cost digital distribution is key for maintaining competitiveness in an increasingly challenging market.

Kotak Securities also made strides, reporting a 14.6% rise in net profit to ₹533 crore. This growth reflects a consistent recovery trend across the brokerage landscape, where firms are exploring various avenues to expand their reach and enhance profitability.

What This Means

The recovery in the brokerage sector is indicative of broader trends within the Indian financial markets. Enhanced retail participation, along with innovation in service offerings, signifies a healthier market environment which may lead to more sustainable long-term growth. The ability of brokerages to adapt to regulatory changes while leveraging technology suggests a strategic shift that could benefit investors and stakeholders alike.
