India’s Crude Imports Steady Amid Rising Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz

India’s crude oil imports soared to a historic high of 4.93 million barrels per day (bpd) in June 2026, primarily due to increased purchases from Russia. Despite tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, refiners have effectively diversified their sourcing strategies, thereby ensuring stable supply amidst regional uncertainties.

Record Imports Driven by Russian Oil

Recent data reveals a significant uptick in India’s crude oil imports, driven largely by heightened purchases from Russia. In June, Russian crude accounted for approximately 2.7 million bpd, representing over 50% of India’s total crude imports, which has bolstered Russia’s position as India’s largest oil supplier. This shift comes as refiners scramble to maintain steady supplies in light of ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

As tensions escalated, the data from Kpler indicates that India’s import strategy has effectively insulated the country from immediate threats to its oil supply. “Crude flows through the Strait had not fully recovered before the latest escalation,” observed Sumit Ritolia, a Kpler analyst. This diversification in sourcing has allowed Indian refiners to effectively manage supply disruptions.

Diversification Strategies Paying Off

India’s approach to sourcing crude oil has become increasingly diversified in recent years. Apart from Russia, Indian refiners have relied on oil from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which are transported through bypass infrastructure to mitigate risks associated with maritime shipping. Additionally, oil from West Africa and Latin America has contributed to refining operations, demonstrating a robust strategy for risk management in a volatile global market.

Ritolia emphasized the importance of this diversification, stating, “For India, it has largely been business as usual over the past 100 days.” The successful management of supply through a varied import portfolio has lessened the potential harmful impacts from recent regional instabilities.

Impact of Regional Tensions

Despite the record imports, analysts warn that prolonged instability in the Strait of Hormuz could lead to rising shipping costs and insurance premiums. Such costs may eventually trickle down to end consumers through fluctuating fuel prices. While crude oil supply may be secure for now, the real concern lies in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, which are more vulnerable to disruptions and alternatives are limited in the short term.

“A prolonged period of instability could tighten availability, increase freight costs, and add pressure to regional prices again,” warned Ritolia. This situation necessitates close monitoring of the geopolitical landscape, especially as it pertains to energy security in India.

What This Means

For Indian consumers and businesses, the implications of heightened crude oil imports are multifaceted. On one hand, India’s ability to diversify its oil sources mitigates short-term risks associated with supply disruptions. However, as tensions in the Gulf region continue, the potential for increased shipping costs poses a future threat to fuel prices.

Furthermore, the focus on sourcing from nations such as Russia and the Gulf States raises questions about energy policy and sustainability in the long term. As India shifts more towards these diversified sources, it also highlights the need for a balanced approach that considers energy security amid global tensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What factors have driven India’s record crude oil imports?

The primary driver of India’s record crude oil imports has been a sharp increase in purchases from Russia, accounting for over 50% of total imports in June 2026.

How do the tensions in the Strait of Hormuz affect India’s oil supply?

While India’s crude supply remains insulated due to diversified sourcing, prolonged instability could raise shipping costs, impacting overall fuel prices.

Is India relying solely on Russian oil for its crude supply?

No, India has diversified its crude supply chain, importing oil from several countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, West Africa, and Latin America.

What are the risks associated with India’s current oil supply strategy?

The risks include potential increases in shipping and insurance costs should regional tensions escalate, particularly affecting LPG and LNG supplies more than crude oil.
