Wrexham AFC has officially appointed Lee Solomon, an executive at Apollo Sports Capital, as a director, as the American investment firm increases its influence in the soccer club. This change comes after a significant stake acquisition and signals a commitment to support the team’s redevelopment efforts.

Investment Background

Lee Solomon’s appointment was confirmed through a Companies House filing on June 10, 2026. Originally appointed on February 6, 2026, the official documentation solidifies Apollo Global Management’s representation at the club’s board. Solomon is a Partner in Private Equity at Apollo Global Management, a firm that acquired nearly a 10% minority stake in Wrexham in late 2025, valuing the club at approximately $468 million (£350 million). Solomon emphasized the investment’s significance, stating, “Wrexham is on an incredible journey, and we are thrilled to support the club, the community, and its vision.”

Financial Strategy and Club Development

Wrexham’s collaboration with Apollo is primarily focused on financing the redevelopment of the Racecourse Ground, particularly the construction of a new Kop Stand. This project, initially announced in 2022, involves a $95 million expenditure to enhance the club’s facilities. Funding will come from multiple sources: Wrexham is expected to allocate approximately $67.62 million, complemented by a $23.46 million grant from the Welsh government. The grant aims to meet UEFA Category 4 requirements, essential for hosting competitive international matches in Wrexham.

Amid previous delays due to planning and funding challenges, the project has evolved. The updated proposal for the new stand will accommodate 7,750 spectators, up from the initial estimate of 5,500, thus requiring additional investment to cover the increased costs. This ambitious plan has positioned Wrexham for significant growth within the football landscape.

Changes in Club Leadership

The current ownership structure remains largely unchanged. Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds, who maintain a combined ownership stake of 70 to 75%, continue to lead the club’s strategic direction. The addition of Solomon to the board, while granting Apollo a voice in club affairs, does not disrupt the power dynamics, as Mac and Reynolds remain firmly in control. Other directors include Kaleen Allyn of the Allyn family, who became minority investors in 2024, reflecting a mixed ownership model that combines both American investment and local interests.

Why This Is Trending

Interest in Wrexham AFC’s developments has surged recently, particularly due to the club’s unique blend of sports and celebrity culture, attracting attention from fans worldwide. The involvement of Hollywood stars such as Ryan Reynolds plays a significant role in this attention. As the club seeks to elevate its status and facilities, many Indians invested in football and sports developments are eager to understand the implications of this strategic investment and how it reflects on the evolving landscape of sports ownership.
