New Delhi: Former India batter Aakash Chopra has advised selectors to exercise caution regarding the potential selection of Vaibhav Suryavanshi for the national team, despite the opener’s remarkable performance in IPL 2026. Chopra’s comments followed Suryavanshi’s explosive innings in the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he scored 97 runs off just 29 balls, leading the Rajasthan Royals to a 47-run victory and a spot in Qualifier 2.

In that match, Suryavanshi’s innings helped set a formidable total of 243 runs, with Dhruv Jurel contributing a quickfire 50. Speaking on Star Sports post-match, Chopra lauded the 15-year-old’s talent, specifically noting his ability to tackle high-quality pace bowling under pressure.

“Bowlers typically have strategies against Vaibhav Suryavanshi; for instance, Pat Cummins began with yorkers that initially restricted his scoring. However, once he settled in, nothing seemed effective. The SRH bowlers appeared overwhelmed, as though struck by a tsunami. When a player like Vaibhav is in this kind of form, the only option for bowlers is to watch,” Chopra remarked.

Chopra highlighted that despite Suryavanshi’s youth, the quality of his play stands out. “Forget his age; look at his abilities. This was among the finest counter-attacking innings by an opener in recent memory. He showcased remarkable control against a competent bowling attack. The strategies devised by the bowlers floundered entirely, which reflects the mark of a special player,” he added.

Despite rising calls for Suryavanshi’s inclusion in the national team, Chopra emphasized the importance of patience in his development. He noted that the next World Cup is still two years away, and even though the prospect of Suryavanshi’s selection is enticing, it is not necessary to disrupt the current combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, who have both performed well.

“We still have ample time before the next World Cup. It’s indeed exciting to think about including Vaibhav Suryavanshi based on his IPL form, but changes should not be made for the sake of it. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are currently excelling. You shouldn’t replace them hastily. His debut doesn’t need to be immediate; he is only 15. There is no rush,” Chopra concluded.
