New Delhi:

Ferrari has made a significant milestone with the introduction of the Luce, its inaugural all-electric supercar, unveiled during a premiere event in Italy on May 25. The company has not only embraced electrification but has also implemented bold design changes, notably incorporating five seats for the first time, moving away from its traditional two-seater configuration.

The Luce is not merely an electric vehicle adorned with a prestigious emblem; it represents a fusion of Ferrari’s renowned luxury and performance, bolstered by innovative aesthetics and advanced technology. The focus remains on maintaining the authentic, tactile Ferrari driving experience while integrating modern innovations.

Collaboration with Renowned Designers

Jony Ive, the former Chief Design Officer at Apple, and Marc Newson, an accomplished industrial designer, collaborated on the Luce’s aesthetics. Their minimalist approach, influenced by Apple’s design philosophy, seamlessly integrates with Ferrari’s core identity, resulting in a vehicle that connects classic emotional driving with a smart, digital interface typical of contemporary technology.

Advanced Displays from Samsung

Inside the Luce, the significance of Samsung’s partnership is evident. Samsung exclusively provided advanced OLED displays for the car, totaling four:

  • A large 12.9-inch driver’s cluster
  • A 12-inch lower display
  • A 10.1-inch central screen
  • A 6.3-inch display for rear passengers

The arrangement of these screens across the dashboard offers a unique visual setup not seen in other vehicles.

Innovative Layered Dashboard Design

The dashboard features a pioneering layered design for the instrument cluster:

This setup includes two displays stacked vertically, with mechanical hands moving between the layers to convey information.

The upper layer provides real-time vehicle data and alerts, while the lower layer displays graphics and backgrounds, merging a tactile, analogue feel with state-of-the-art visuals. Samsung’s HIAA technology, initially designed for small openings in smartphone screens, has been expanded significantly for the Luce.

Key functions of the dashboard include:

  • The lower OLED layer showcases graphics and gauge backgrounds
  • The upper OLED layer displays alerts and live vehicle data
  • Mechanical hands operate between both layers
  • Creates an analogue-inspired digital interaction

The cockpit is designed to maintain an emotional connection for the driver, even as technology advances.

Emphasis on Luxury and Technology

Ferrari’s philosophy with the Luce EV underscores its commitment to merging its heritage with cutting-edge technology. Ernesto Lasalandra, Ferrari’s R&D chief, articulates that the objective was to combine the company’s legacy with next-generation technology to create a driving experience that remains unmistakably Ferrari.

Ultimately, the Luce EV signifies a substantial step forward in Ferrari’s journey toward electrification while preserving the brand’s iconic essence. As the automotive industry increasingly shifts toward electric mobility, Ferrari aims to retain its historical identity.
