Trump Leads Prayer Rally to Reaffirm America as ‘One Nation Under God’

The administration of former President Donald Trump hosted a nine-hour prayer event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary. The event, titled “Rededicate 250: A National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise and Thanksgiving,” occurred on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time (13:00 to 22:00 GMT). Organizers aimed to mark the rededication of the United States as “One Nation to God.” The event featured a variety of performers, pastors, civil rights leaders, and Republican allies, including Senator Tim Scott, who emphasized the belief that rights are granted by God rather than the government. Video messages from administration members, including Trump, were broadcast during the event, with Trump referencing a biblical promise of protection and punishment. However, the event drew criticism for its predominantly Christian speakers, with only one non-Christian participant, and was characterized by some religious leaders as a political maneuver rather than a genuine expression of faith. Concerns were also raised regarding the potential erosion of the separation between church and state, a principle enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Despite some support for intertwining Christianity with national identity, a Pew Research Center survey indicated that a majority of Americans still favor maintaining a distinct separation between religion and government.
