Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking his commitment to usher in a “new era” of secularism in the state. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on May 10, 2026.
However, the ceremony drew criticism from both the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) regarding the order of the state song, “Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu.” The two parties have called for the song to be prioritized in future government events, emphasizing its cultural significance in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay, who leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), took a moment during the ceremony to engage with attendees by taking selfies, showcasing a more approachable image of the new government. The event symbolizes a shift in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, with Vijay’s administration promising a focus on social justice and inclusive governance.
