Bajaj continues to introduce revised engines across its sub-400cc motorcycle lineup, responding to heavy taxation on bikes above 350cc. The company has created a derivative of its 398cc engine, achieved by simply shortening the stroke and recalibrating the combustion chamber, timing, fuelling, and exhaust systems.
The latest model is the most affordable 390 Adventure, priced at ₹2.81 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), without any suffix attached. In contrast, the original 390 models, categorized as X, R, and S, start at ₹62,000 more. This price discrepancy raises the question of whether the original model offers enough to justify the extra expense.
Historically, Bajaj’s engine performance is unmatched in its category, providing a sense of ease that rivals struggle to match. However, while every bit of engine output may matter, the so-called “full 390” experience may not be as evident in the new model unless one is accustomed to the original’s capabilities.
In terms of performance on the road, riders will notice a decrease when transitioning to the 390 Adventure. While it retains the characteristics of a typical KTM engine, the sharpness has dulled. The Adventure model has traditionally been the more subdued offering within the KTM family, especially compared to the Duke and RC models, and this adjustment further emphasizes its calm demeanor.
For riders moving up from 250cc bikes, the Adventure continues to offer better performance levels, maintaining the capability for high-speed cruising. However, experienced riders may find the performance threshold lower than expected.
During a 350 km ride over two days, I initially felt disappointment at the performance drop but grew to appreciate the model’s characteristics by the second day. Apart from the dip in performance, the equipment remains consistent with that of the Adventure X, which is priced similarly. This equipment level delivers comparable comfort and capability at a significantly reduced price.
However, the changes have negatively affected touring efficiency. Although the Adventure is designed for comfortable long rides, the smaller engine limits its efficiency and fuel range. The current model managed 26 kmpl, while the Adventure S previously offered 28 kmpl.
For those considering the higher-spec versions of the Adventure, it’s worth noting that the performance edge could still be crucial, particularly for riders focused on off-road capabilities or adjustable suspension. Additionally, aftermarket solutions can enhance the bike without the substantial cost, as the top-spec S model costs ₹1.15 lakh more (ex-showroom).
Ultimately, those who prioritize performance can consider investing in the higher-spec models. For many, however, the primary appeal of the 390 Adventure lies in the overall experience it provides rather than sheer power.
