Twenty-five people lost their lives and six others sustained injuries in a devastating fire that engulfed a club in Arpora village, North Goa, late on Saturday night.

The fire broke out around midnight at Birch By Romeo Lane, a club situated near the bustling and highly frequented Baga beach area, one of Goa’s top tourist destinations.

Authorities believe the blaze may have been triggered by a cylinder explosion. Multiple fire tenders were deployed to the location, and rescue operations continued through the night into Sunday morning.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that a majority of the victims were workers employed in the club’s kitchen, while three to four of those killed were tourists visiting the state. He added that three individuals succumbed to burn injuries, whereas the remaining victims died due to suffocation caused by the thick smoke.

Sawant, who visited the site shortly after the incident, announced that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the fire and identify those responsible for the tragedy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and approved an ex-gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. Those injured in the incident will receive ₹50,000 in financial assistance, he said.
