VCK Backs TVK to Avert President’s Rule, Affirms Stability of DMK Alliance in Tamil Nadu

NEW DELHI: On Saturday, Thol Thirumavalavan, the leader of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), defended his party’s decision to extend unconditional support to Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). He stated that this move aims to ensure political stability in Tamil Nadu and prevent the imposition of President’s rule in the state.

Speaking in Chennai, Thirumavalavan emphasized that the decision was made independently while the VCK remains aligned with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance. “We want to support TVK for two reasons: VCK should not hinder Vijay from becoming Chief Minister, and Tamil Nadu should not come under Governor’s rule,” he asserted. He underscored that the ongoing political crisis in Tamil Nadu should not lead to the establishment of President’s rule, and the party had considered a “long-term vision” before offering its support to TVK.

Thirumavalavan clarified that the VCK’s support for TVK would not impact its relationship with the DMK-led coalition. “We are still in DMK’s alliance; we took this independent decision as a political party during the crisis,” he added.

The announcement from the VCK comes amidst heightened political activity after TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling short of the majority by 10 seats. VCK’s endorsement, along with backing from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), elevated TVK’s seat count to 120, surpassing the majority threshold of 118.

Following the VCK’s declaration, IUML also confirmed its support for TVK. Senior VCK member Vanni Arasu formally conveyed their backing to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. TVK leader Adhav Arjuna expressed gratitude to Congress, Left parties, and Thirumavalavan for their support, stating confidence that Vijay would soon become the next Chief Minister. Vijay is expected to meet the Governor shortly to stake a claim to form TVK’s inaugural government in Tamil Nadu.
