New Delhi: In the 44th match of the IPL (Indian Premier League) 2026, the Mumbai Indians faced off against the Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 2. The Chennai Super Kings emerged victorious, besting the Mumbai Indians by eight wickets.

Mumbai, batting first, could only muster a total of 159 runs in their innings. In response, the Super Kings successfully chased down the target in just 18.1 overs.

Post-match, Mumbai’s captain Hardik Pandya reflected on his team’s performance, indicating that the season had not gone as planned. “Not the season, I feel, not just the night. Yeah, they played better, they bowled better, they fielded better, and they batted better,” Pandya said during the post-match presentation. When discussing the possibilities of setting a higher target on the pitch, he noted, “At one point, we were looking to get around 180, 190. Should have been a good total, but we could not get the momentum post 10 overs and could not get the finish as well.”

Pandya was also questioned about the team’s bowling strategy in the second innings, to which he responded, “I don’t know what aggressive we would have been. I think we would have had to throw some fireballs to get them out. But yeah, the bowling options which we had, we went with it, and they just played smart cricket. And yeah, they were better.”

Following this defeat, the Mumbai Indians remain in ninth place in the standings, with only two wins out of nine matches, putting them on the brink of elimination from playoff contention.
