The selection of a high-performance automotive testing center and racetrack in Coimbatore for the first unveiling of POCO’s latest smartphone was deliberate. The POCO X8 Pro Max, which is launched alongside the X8 Pro, is being marketed as a device for gamers and intensive users, encapsulated by the tagline ‘all throttle, no brakes.’
Traditionally, POCO’s F Series has been positioned as flagship killers, while the X series has acted as a bridge between the budget-friendly M Series and the premium F Series. The X8 Pro Max represents a crucial entry for POCO in a competitive price segment, which currently features new offerings from brands like Nothing, Samsung, OnePlus, and iQOO. Initial assessments suggest that the X8 Pro Max delivers robust performance for those seeking powerful specifications.
Design
The design of the X8 Pro Max stands out as one of the most aesthetically pleasing among POCO’s offerings. The vertically-aligned, racetrack-inspired camera module aligns with its performance-oriented branding. Features like a metallic mid-frame paired with a fibreglass rear panel not only provide a premium feel but also enhance durability. Despite weighing 220 grams, the device manages to feel well-balanced and light. With ratings of IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K, the X8 Pro Max claims impressive durability.
Available in Black, Blue, and White—without the brand’s iconic yellow—the device’s Dynamic RGB Lights are particularly striking on the black variant. Dual-ringed LED lights encircle the camera lenses, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality, similar to Nothing’s glyph interface. The Iron Man Edition is designed with lighting mimicking an Arc Reactor.
Display
Initial interactions with the X8 Pro Max’s display reveal a fast ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint sensor that operates effectively even under wet conditions. The device features a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display (2772 x 1280 pixels / 447 PPI), suitable for gaming and binge-watching. POCO has minimized bezels to achieve over a 94% screen-to-body ratio. Users can enjoy content in HDR 10 and Dolby Vision, resulting in vibrant visuals, especially when watching shows like “Peaky Blinders: Immortal Man.” The display enhances the gaming experience with features such as WildBoost optimization and Game HDR.
Performance
POCO emphasizes performance with the X8 Pro Max, which is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9500s processor. The device offers two variants featuring 12GB of RAM, and the 12GB/512GB model demonstrates effective thermal management during extensive gaming sessions. It achieved Geekbench multi-core scores of approximately 8000, indicating its capability to handle demanding tasks. The X8 Pro Max runs on Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3.0 atop Android 16, promising four years of Android OS updates and six years of security updates.
The substantial 9000 mAh battery provides reliable longevity, allowing average users up to two days of use and potential three-day usability for moderate users. Accompanied by a 100W charger, the device can be fully charged in just over an hour.
Camera
While focusing primarily on performance, the X8 Pro Max’s camera setup includes a 50MP main sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide lens, alongside a 20MP selfie camera. The camera performs well under optimal lighting, particularly with the primary lens. However, low-light performance and ultra-wide results are more inconsistent. Although not on par with flagship devices, the camera can meet expectations in most everyday scenarios.
Verdict
The POCO X8 Pro Max is designed for speed enthusiasts, providing a high-quality display and rapid performance, backed by a substantial battery life. It is a solid choice for users prioritizing performance and battery capabilities over camera quality.
