Somalia’s Hunger Crisis Deepens: Drought Forces Over 500,000 to Flee Their Homes

Across Somalia, communities are enduring an escalating hunger crisis, exacerbated by prolonged drought that has displaced over 500,000 individuals this year alone. The situation has been further worsened by the failed Deyr rains in September, which have devastated livelihoods and resulted in significant livestock mortality, leading to yet another year of poor harvests. Currently, more than 3.3 million Somalis are already uprooted, with displaced families facing heightened risks of starvation, according to the UN OCHA’s Somalia Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan 2026. The decline in aid funding has intensified the crisis, as only 14 percent of the necessary humanitarian response funds have been secured this year. Many displaced individuals, including those like Fatima, who has fled her home five times due to conflict and drought, arrive in camps malnourished and exhausted, finding scant relief but rather a lack of support. Aid to Somalia has significantly decreased, further complicating an already desperate situation. The recent April–June rainy season, while underway, offers little hope of recovery for families who have lost their herds and farms, underscoring the urgent need for immediate assistance.
