New Delhi:

Arijit Singh, one of India’s most acclaimed playback singers, received an early opportunity from renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Bhansali reportedly noticed Singh after his appearance on the reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005 and offered him a song for the 2007 film Saawariya. Although Arijit recorded the track “Yun Shabnami” for the film starring Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, it ultimately did not make the final cut.

At that time, Arijit was a newcomer striving to establish himself in the music industry. While this was not his first performance as a playback singer, it signified the early recognition he received for his musical talent from prominent directors and composers.

Arijit’s Television Debut

Arijit initially gained recognition through Fame Gurukul, a popular television show for singers that allowed him to present his musical talents to a broader audience. Despite not winning the competition, the exposure he received was pivotal for his subsequent career. Following the show, Arijit worked diligently behind the scenes as a music programmer and assistant.

Breakthrough in Film

Arijit’s entry into the film industry came in 2011 with the song “Phir Mohabbat” from Murder 2. However, it was the track “Tum Hi Ho” from the 2013 movie Aashiqui 2 that catapulted him to fame and success. This romantic ballad quickly became a sensation and was recognized as one of the most popular songs of the decade. Since then, he has continued to deliver hit songs, including “Channa Mereya,” “Raabta,” “Kesariya,” “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,” and “Gerua.”

Retirement Announcement

On January 27, 2026, the National Film Award-winning singer announced his retirement, stating that he would no longer accept singing assignments. It is noteworthy that previously recorded songs by the artist are still being released.
