NEW DELHI: Independent MP Pappu Yadav from Bihar ignited fresh controversy after defending his previous remarks deemed sexist. Following a notice from the Bihar State Women’s Commission regarding his comments on women’s roles in politics, Yadav claimed that 70 to 80 percent of politicians engage in watching pornography. “I have stated this on the Floor of the House too that 70-80 percent of politicians watch porn,” he emphasized.

While addressing the criticism, he challenged the authority of those issuing the notice. “So, get everyone checked. If there is porn on my phone, check me too. Who are these people who have served me a notice? Who are they with? There are several photos with former ministers. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones,” he remarked.

On Tuesday, Yadav had asserted that women in politics are not respected, stating, “In India, women are called goddesses, but they will never be respected here. The system and society are responsible for this. Who preys on women, from America to India, it is politicians! Ninety percent of women cannot start in politics without visiting a male leader’s room.” He further criticized societal norms, saying, “A culture of exploiting women has become ingrained. Go to school, and your daughter faces exploitation; go to college, and exploitation in the name of ragging; go to the office, exploitation is there as well. Leaders behave like vultures toward women.”

Yadav’s comments have drawn substantial backlash, with political leaders labeling his remarks as anti-women. In response, the Bihar State Women’s Commission stated they were taking “suo motu cognizance of this matter,” demanding an explanation for his offensive statements. “It also asks why a recommendation should not be made to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the cancellation of your membership,” they added in a statement.

This incident occurs amidst broader discussions in Indian politics, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized opposition parties for not supporting the 131st Constitutional (Amendment) Bill, 2026. This bill aimed to advance reservations for women following delimitation. Modi accused Congress, DMK, TMC, and SP of being anti-women in their stance.
