Chennai Super Kings Seek Replacement for Injured Ayush Mhatre

Mumbai: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have faced a challenging season in the current Indian Premier League (IPL), securing only two victories out of six matches. The situation has become more difficult with the news that key batter Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury sustained during the recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. His recovery is expected to take between six to twelve weeks. As the franchise seeks a replacement, we examine three potential candidates who could step in for Mhatre against Mumbai Indians.

1. Urvil Patel

Urvil Patel is the most likely replacement for Mhatre, having shown promise in the previous season when he joined as an injury substitute. In IPL 2025, he played three matches for CSK and scored 68 runs at an impressive strike rate of 212.5. Patel’s ability to capitalize on powerplay overs positions him well to replicate Mhatre’s role during his brief time in IPL 2026.

2. Kartik Sharma

Kartik Sharma, who was acquired by CSK for Rs 14.5 crore during the auction, has had a slow start this season with only 25 runs in three matches. Mhatre’s injury might present Sharma with another chance, possibly at the top of the order. If CSK opts to utilize his skills, he may find himself batting at number three. This would allow him to demonstrate his power-hitting capabilities during the powerplay, as the team evaluates whether to elevate a young prospect over Patel.

3. Prashant Veer

Prashant Veer offers a more unconventional option; however, he is not suited for an opening role. Should he be included in the playing XI, it would likely be in a lower-order position, where he previously impressed by scoring 43 runs in an earlier match. Veer can also contribute with left-arm spin, adding variety to CSK’s bowling lineup. This adjustment would allow CSK to consider either Sarfaraz Khan or Matt Short to take on the opening responsibilities, aiming for a rapid offensive after the first six overs.

The franchise will need to make a decision quickly as they gear up for their next match.
