In the vibrant heart of New Delhi, a dedicated group of pigeon enthusiasts continues the age-old tradition of kabootarbaazi, a practice rooted in Mughal heritage. Azhar Udeen, a 30-year-old pigeon keeper, along with his younger brother and friends, regularly gather on their terrace near Jama Masjid to train and release over 120 pigeons of various breeds. This meticulous practice involves training the birds to fly in precise formations and participate in races, a skill that requires approximately four months of rigorous preparation. The process includes stimulating the pigeons to fly against the wind by creating loud noises, thereby increasing their endurance and navigation skills. For these practitioners, the experience transcends mere bird training; the rooftop gatherings provide a sense of community and respite from the hustle of urban life, fostering camaraderie among enthusiasts as they share in this therapeutic pursuit.
