A Muslim woman doctor from Mawana in Meerut district has been booked for allegedly posting a video on social media related to the December 6, 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, police said on Monday, December 8.

According to officials, Dr Sheeba Khan, a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) practitioner, was taken into custody under preventive measures for breach of peace and later released on a personal bond on Thursday, December 11.

Authorities said the video surfaced during intensified monitoring of online activity on December 6, when security agencies were on alert across the state.

Mawana Station House Officer Poonam Jadon said Dr Khan had uploaded an edited audio-video clip linked to the Babri Masjid case, which was viewed by authorities “as an attempt to disturb communal harmony.”

Following a complaint, police registered a case against her under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, which pertains to publishing or transmitting objectionable content online.

Dr Khan was detained from her Abdullapur clinic on Sunday and produced before a court under preventive provisions, said Sub-Divisional Magistrate Santosh Kumar Singh, adding that she was released after furnishing a personal bond.

Officials said a technical examination of the video is underway, and further action will be taken based on the findings.

December 6 marks the anniversary of the 1992 demolition of the 16th-century Babri Masjid by Hindu nationalist mobs.
